On May 5th, Shaanxi preliminary contest for CCTV 2014 Chinese Bridge—Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreigners was successfully held at Shaanxi Normal University. Through many rounds of severe competitions, an Italian student, Dario Marotta, from NPU won the semi-final.

The contest mainly tested the competitors’ in pronunciations, intonations, conversations, and debating, to review their  language competenceand awareness of culture and life. After hard competition, all together 5 participants entered the semi-final, among whom was the NPU Italian student Dario Marotta, who impressed all the judges and the audience present by his solid Chinese foundation, rich knowledge in Chinese culture, and excellent live performance.

Testing Chinese characters and Chinese culture, the Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreigners delves deeply the profound content of Chinese culture. And to cater for more enjoyment and knowledge, it has also enhanced the real life and practical elements in the competition, thus displaying the charms of Chinese culture from multiple dimensions and promoting foreigners’ enthusiasm in learning Chinese. NPU has sent contestants to the competition for 7 years successively. Through selecting the distinguished oversea students of the school, and assigning an experienced Chinese teacher to coach them, NPU has striven hard to achieve grand results in the competition so as to demonstrate NPU’s fruitful achievements in international education.

Xi’an Shiyou University was founded in 1951,it is People’s Republic of China’s first professional university aiming attraining technical staffs for petroleum industry. Recently, our school was successfully selected as one of the second batch of demonstration bases of study in China. There have been 14 universities and colleges selected, and our school was the only one in Shanxi to be selected, as well as the first one among Shanxi provincial universities and national petroleum & petrochemical universities.

The construction of demonstration base of study in China is an important task of implementing “Study in China Plan”. The demonstration base will arranged according to Ministry of Education to undertake or be involve in the key projects and activities of study in China, and undertake the task of teaching faculties and managerial staffs’ training and the development of relevant research in study in China.

In recent years, our school has been attaching great importance to the education of study in China, and brought it into the university development, the enrollment scale keep increasing, and education level is in expending. Our school built education system of standard management and perfect mode; we carried out colorful and characteristic cultural experience and study activities. In 2012, our school was approved to be one of “Colleges and Universities recruiting international students with Chinese Government Scholarship”, in 2013, the school was approved to be one of “Colleges and Universities independently recruiting Russian Students with Chinese Government Scholarship”, and in 2014, our school was approved “Colleges and Universities Qualified for Independent Recruitment of International Students”. The education mode for petroleum engineering majored international students gained the education ministry and universities’ approval and agreement, the innovation and practice of education mode for international students majoring in characteristic specialty won special award of Shanxi Province Colleges and Universities Education Achievement Prize.

As one of demonstration bases of study abroad in China, our school will comply with the requirement of guidelines of study abroad in China to carefully carry out Measurement for the Construction of Demonstration base of Study in China, and focus on quality to boost scientific, rapid and sustainable development of study in China.

It is reported that the International Cooperation and Communication Department of Ministry of Education put forward in “Notices on Enforcing the Construction of Demonstration Bases of Study abroad in China” that till 2020, there will 100 demonstration bases have been built, and make these bases compatible and reputed in international student education so as to lead the international recruitment and management, and to undertake the task of the innovation for international student education and management system

There are two types of demonstration bases of study in China, one is colleges and universities directly under the Ministry of Education and other ministries and commissions, which is selected by International Cooperation and Communication Department; the other type is local colleges and universities recommended by provincial administrative department for education. In 2013, Ministry of Education started construction of demonstration base of study in China; the first batch of demonstration base has 38 colleges and universities, 22 among which are ones under Ministry of Education, the rest 16 are local ones; and the second batch of demonstration base has 14 colleges and universities. so far, three Shanxi provincial colleges and universities were selected.

On May 8th, the signing ceremony of “Strategic Cooperation Agreement on Information Construction” between NPU and China Telecom in Shaanxi was jointly held on Youyi Campus. The two sides would strive to set a model for college information construction through collaborations of various forms at high levels, thus to accelerate the construction of Shaanxi Smart Campus Program, and the progress of Shaanxi Education Informationalization. President Wang Jinsong of NPU and General Manager Zhang Hongtao of Shaanxi Telecom signed the agreement on behalf of both sides.

According to the agreement, the two sides would conduct collaborations in the fields of network infrastructure, application of campus informationalization, talents' training, and community service.

Secretary of the Party Committee of NPU, Chen Xioazhu said in her speech that being the trend of the development in the world, informationalization would be important power to promote social and economic reform. NPU would deepen the school’s administration reform with the help of informationalization. Meanwhile, NPU would also conduct in-depth development of superior education resources, and elevate the levels of talents’ cultivation, for a progress of NPU’s internationalization in a more open informationalized surrounding.

China Telecom’s President Yang Jie said that China Telecom would vigorously promote the application of mobile internet information technology of new generation, and enhance the informationalization of education administration and the service level for education, so as to create better conditions for both the teachers and students of NPU to enjoy informationalized new life.

On May 6th, the First NPU Overseas Students Cultural Festival was held on Youyi campus. The overseas students from eight countries, such as Korea, Cameroon, Cambodia, Yemen, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sudan and Uganda, showed their local flavor and unique cultures through pictures, videos, traditional clothes and dances, food and handicrafts. All the student audience took pictures to capture that happy moment, enjoying the delicious foods and fantastic shows. They said this festival was quite impressive. It was a good experience to know about the cultures and the traditions of various countries, while tasting the delicious foods. In recent years, as the internationalization of NPU progressed, more and more oversea students have come to study in NPU. By 2013, over 780 oversea students from more than 70 countries studied in our university, ranking at the top among Shaanxi universities. Sun Wubin, the Associate Dean of the School of International Education, addressed “The first International Students Cultural Festival” is a window for disseminating the international culture of NPU and its diversity of oversea student education and internationalization. The festival is beneficial to enhance the cultural exchange of students around the world, and develop better communication between domestic students and international students.
